This wall art was hooked by Ottawa artist Sonia McCaul. Using the flag as the main pattern, the artist has created a colourful piece in celebration of Canada.
Rug hooking is a centuries-old art and craft where rugs are made by pulling loops of yarn or fabric (traditionally recycled) through a stiff woven base such as burlap, linen, or rug warp. The loops are pulled through the backing material by using a crochet-type hook mounted in a handle (usually wood) for leverage. In more recent decades rug hookers have been exploring new materials and new techniques. This experimentation, combined with knowledge and respect for what has gone before, allows artists to explore new imagery and evolve this fibre art form.
